Rockingham, N.C. – Roads and low-lying areas across central North Carolina are flooding Thursday evening as slow-moving thunderstorms dump several inches of rain on the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, flash flood warnings are in effect until 9:45 p.m. for Anson, Richmond, Stanly, Davidson, Montgomery, and Randolph counties. Radar estimates show up to 3 inches of rainfall already, with an additional 1 to 2 inches expected through the evening.

In Stanly County, flooding is impacting areas near Lake Tillery, Albemarle, and Badin. Campgrounds and marinas along Morrow Mountain State Park and Fish Tales Marina are under threat. In Richmond and Anson counties, roads in Rockingham, Wadesboro, and Hamlet may become impassable.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded streets and heed “Turn around, don’t drown” warnings. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Residents should move to higher ground and monitor local alerts.

This evening’s storm system may lead to further advisories as rainfall continues. Flash flood warnings remain active through 9:45 p.m., and more alerts may follow if rain persists.
