Newport, NC – Eastern North Carolina is preparing for a winter storm expected to bring freezing rain, sleet, and snow Friday evening into Saturday morning, creating hazardous travel conditions across the region. Counties including Martin, Pitt, Greene, and Lenoir are likely to see the greatest impact, with ice accumulation making roads, bridges, and overpasses particularly dangerous.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest icing is expected in inland areas, especially north and west of the coastal counties. Ice totals could reach up to 0.25 inches in some locations. The storm is expected to begin Friday night and peak overnight before tapering off early Saturday morning. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during this time and to monitor updates from local authorities for road conditions and closures.

After the storm clears, Saturday will remain cold, with highs only in the mid-40s. Sunday is expected to bring sunnier skies, with temperatures climbing to the mid-40s, offering a reprieve from the icy weather.

Residents are advised to prepare by securing emergency supplies and ensuring proper heating at home. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or visit weather.gov for the latest updates.
