Newport, NC – A strong cold front sweeping through eastern North Carolina is creating hazardous fire conditions this weekend. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning on Sunday due to gusty winds and dry air, which heighten the risk of wildfires.

According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, northwest winds of 25-30 mph are expected Sunday afternoon, with gusts nearing 35 mph in some areas. Combined with relative humidity dropping below 30%, conditions are conducive to rapid fire spread. The region has seen below-average rainfall, further intensifying the threat.

Temperatures will remain brisk, with lows around 22 degrees Sunday night after daytime highs near 47 degrees. The clear skies offer relief from rain but underscore the need for caution. Outdoor burning is discouraged, and residents are reminded to ensure fire suppression equipment is available if necessary.

Looking ahead, the weather will remain cool but sunny through early next week. Monday brings a significant warm-up, with highs reaching 62 degrees, but rain returns by evening, with a 90% chance expected. Clear skies and colder air will follow on Tuesday, with highs in the low 40s.

Motorists traveling on NC-24 and US-70 should exercise caution with gusty winds possibly affecting high-profile vehicles. This weekend is an excellent opportunity to plan indoor activities and avoid fire-related hazards.
