Morehead City, North Carolina – Rip currents and thunderstorms will continue to batter North Carolina’s coast as dangerous beach conditions and inland storms persist into Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Wednesday evening for the northern Outer Banks and beaches from Hatteras Inlet to Surf City. The highest rip current threat peaks around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday—just hours before holiday beach traffic intensifies. Officials warn swimmers to stay out of the surf, as even strong swimmers could be pulled into deeper waters.
Inland, the focus shifts to Thursday afternoon. Scattered thunderstorms are likely after 2 p.m., with localized downpours, brief gusts near 20 mph, and isolated lightning risks. Rain chances continue Friday, especially before 11 a.m., and could disrupt morning commutes on US-70 and NC-24 near Newport and Morehead City.
Beachgoers should avoid swimming and obey posted warnings. Travelers should monitor weather alerts and delay non-essential driving during storms.
