Blacksburg, VA – A wind advisory has been issued for portions of northwest North Carolina and central and southwest Virginia starting tonight. The advisory will be in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday, with gusts up to 50 mph expected.

The National Weather Service (NWS) announced west winds will reach speeds of 15 to 20 mph. Gusts are likely to topple unsecured objects and could bring down tree limbs, increasing the potential for power outages. Areas impacted include Boone, Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Lexington.

According to the NWS, residents should use caution, especially when driving high-profile vehicles. Gusty winds could make travel hazardous in affected regions, particularly along open roadways and mountain passes.

Precautionary measures are recommended. Securing outdoor items, such as patio furniture and decorations, can prevent them from becoming airborne. Power companies in the region are on standby for possible outages and encourage residents to have flashlights, batteries, and backup chargers ready.

Drivers are advised to maintain a firm grip on the wheel and stay alert for sudden gusts. Those planning to travel overnight should consider delaying trips until winds subside.

Temperatures are expected to remain seasonal during the wind event, but wind chills could make it feel colder in higher elevations. The advisory will expire by early Friday morning, but lingering gusts may still occur.

Stay tuned to local weather reports for updates and prepare for potential disruptions.
