Wilmington, NC – Portions of southeast North Carolina and northeast South Carolina are under a Winter Weather Advisory from Friday at 4 p.m. to Saturday at 7 a.m., with freezing rain expected. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports ice accumulations could reach one-tenth of an inch, potentially creating hazardous travel conditions and power outages.

The advisory spans areas including Lumberton, Florence, and Whiteville, where temperatures will drop below freezing as a low-pressure system moves northeast from the Gulf Coast. According to the NWS, this weather pattern could significantly impact Friday evening commutes and overnight travel. Residents should anticipate icy roads and sidewalks, especially during peak evening hours.

Local officials urge drivers to reduce speed and use caution. Travelers are advised to check road conditions by dialing 511 before heading out. Freezing rain may also lead to isolated power outages, prompting recommendations for residents to prepare with flashlights, extra batteries, and emergency supplies.

The freezing rain is expected to taper off by early Saturday morning as the storm system moves offshore near Cape Hatteras. However, residual ice could linger on untreated surfaces. Temperatures are projected to rise later Saturday, improving travel conditions across affected areas.

Stay updated with the latest weather alerts and plan accordingly to ensure safety during this winter weather event.
