Marion, N.C. – Residents in Graham and McDowell counties should limit outdoor activity through Saturday night as fine particulate levels climb into the Code Orange range, prompting a statewide health alert.

According to the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day remains in effect until midnight Saturday for towns including Robbinsville, Marion, Old Fort, and Stecoah. The alert signals that air quality may be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and people with respiratory conditions.

In Marion and surrounding areas, dry weather and stagnant air have contributed to a buildup of pollutants, especially in mountain valleys and near wooded areas. The elevated particulate matter is primarily from vehicle emissions and other small-scale sources, with little wind to disperse it.

Residents are urged to avoid prolonged outdoor exercise, keep windows closed, and use air purifiers if possible. Schools and childcare centers are advised to monitor recess and outdoor activities. This is the first Code Orange alert in the region this spring.

The alert remains active until midnight Saturday, but more advisories may be issued if air conditions worsen into Sunday.
