Huntsville, Alabama – North Alabama residents are enjoying one final day of sunshine Wednesday before a surge of afternoon thunderstorms begins impacting the region through the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, highs will reach the upper 80s Wednesday with mostly sunny skies, but by Thursday, rain chances jump to 40% by the afternoon. The storm threat intensifies Friday through Sunday, with rain and thunderstorms likely each afternoon—peaking at an 80% chance on Saturday and Sunday.

Cities across the Tennessee Valley, including Decatur, Athens, and Scottsboro, should expect slowdowns on I-565 and U.S. 72 during peak travel hours due to wet roads and reduced visibility. Flash flooding may become a concern in low-lying areas and neighborhoods with poor drainage. Residents are advised to avoid outdoor plans during storm windows and ensure all electronic devices are charged in case of power outages.

This marks the first major multi-day storm pattern in June for the Huntsville region, bringing a shift from the recent dry spell. Storms are expected to be scattered but strong at times, with localized downpours and lightning.

Rain chances stay elevated through Sunday night, with more updates likely as the weekend nears.
