Kentland, IN – Drivers traveling through Newton County should prepare for delays as a major road resurfacing project is set to begin along U.S. 24 this week, impacting traffic between Kentland and Goodland.

According to INDOT Northwest, work is scheduled to begin Wednesday on U.S. 24 between U.S. 41 and the eastern junction of State Road 55. The project includes full road resurfacing as well as additional construction activities aimed at improving long-term driving conditions along the corridor.

Crews will begin with paving operations, reducing traffic to one lane with alternating closures during daytime hours. Flaggers will be present to direct vehicles through the work zone between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution while traveling through the area.

In addition to resurfacing, INDOT officials say two culverts along the route will be replaced, requiring full road closures at those specific locations. While exact dates for the culvert work have not yet been announced, drivers should expect detours once closures are scheduled. The official detour route will follow U.S. 41, State Road 16, and State Road 55.

Crews will also conduct patching operations, addressing deeper structural issues beneath the roadway surface. In some areas, repairs will extend to the base layer to ensure durability and create a smoother driving experience once the project is complete.

The resurfacing project is expected to continue through the end of July, weather permitting. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and stay updated on changing traffic conditions throughout the duration of the work.
