Southern Herkimer County, NY – Residents are bracing for a heavy lake-effect snowstorm expected to last through Sunday afternoon, bringing hazardous travel conditions and significant accumulations.
The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning, effective from 10 a.m. Saturday until 4 p.m. Sunday. Forecasters anticipate snowfall between 5 and 10 inches, with locally higher amounts in areas under the most persistent snow bands. Gusty winds, reaching up to 35 mph, will lead to blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile in some areas.
Roads, including major thoroughfares like Route 28 and Route 5S, are expected to become slick and hazardous. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid nonessential travel and prepare for potential delays if driving becomes necessary.
Snow showers are expected to taper off Sunday evening, but residual drifting may continue to impact roads into Monday morning. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, stay tuned to local weather updates, and prepare for potential disruptions.
