Albany, NY – With snow showers spreading across upstate New York and overnight lows plunging below freezing this month, transportation officials are warning drivers in Albany, Syracuse, and Buffalo that bridges and overpasses are icing over faster than main roadways.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), bridges freeze first because cold air surrounds them from both above and below, pulling heat from the concrete more quickly than ground-level roads. This double exposure means icy spots can form suddenly, even when the air temperature hovers just above freezing.

“Bridges can turn to ice in minutes during freezing drizzle or snow,” the NWS said in a Friday statement. “Drivers should approach them with caution, especially during overnight hours and early morning commutes.”

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has been applying salt and brine to bridges along I-90, I-81, and I-87, focusing on elevated spans and river crossings that historically freeze first. Officials remind motorists to reduce speed, avoid sudden braking, and maintain steady steering while driving across icy sections.

Black ice remains the biggest danger this time of year, as thin, transparent layers of ice appear like wet pavement — often catching drivers by surprise.
