New York State – Residents in western New York should prepare for heavy lake-effect snow starting Saturday, impacting travel and safety along major roadways like I-90, I-86, and I-81. Snow bands will bring accumulations of up to 30 inches in some areas, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and pedestrians.
According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snow is expected east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, with deteriorating visibility and deep snow cover beginning Saturday afternoon. Areas such as Dunkirk, Eden, and Watertown are under advisories, with snow accumulations reaching 18–24 inches near Lake Erie and 24–30 inches near Lake Ontario by Sunday morning.
Travelers should avoid unnecessary trips, especially along I-90 from Ripley to Angola and I-81 near Watertown, where whiteout conditions are likely. Gusty winds of up to 30 mph will create blowing snow, further reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidents.
The storm will persist through Sunday and into Monday, with additional snow expected early next week. While Saturday begins with mostly cloudy skies, snow showers will intensify in the afternoon and continue overnight. By Sunday, temperatures will remain below freezing, with highs around 33°F and additional snowfall of up to five inches.
Residents are urged to stock up on supplies and ensure their vehicles are equipped with emergency kits. If driving is necessary, allow extra time and use extreme caution on slick, snow-covered roads. The extended forecast shows potential snow showers through midweek, keeping the region under wintry conditions well beyond the weekend.
