Herkimer, NY – A multi-day lake-effect snowstorm is set to bring heavy snow and hazardous conditions to Herkimer and Hamilton counties starting Wednesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning from 1 p.m. Wednesday through 4 p.m. Saturday. Snowfall totals of 6-12 inches are expected, with localized higher amounts in areas under the most persistent snow bands. Winds could gust up to 40 mph, reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile at times.

According to the NWS, the snow will begin Wednesday afternoon and intensify overnight, transitioning into a prolonged lake-effect snow event. The snow bands are predicted to oscillate between the Mohawk Valley and Adirondacks, creating treacherous road conditions and blowing snow.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to prepare for sudden weather changes. Drivers should keep an emergency kit in their vehicles and check road conditions before heading out.
