Binghamton, N.Y. – Temperatures will climb into the 70s across much of Central New York today, but the afternoon warmth comes with a chance of scattered rain showers and isolated thunderstorms between 2 and 8 p.m., especially in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a warm front is pushing through the region, bringing a mix of mild air and instability. While some showers could pop up this afternoon, dry air aloft is expected to limit their strength and coverage. The chance for storms will increase again later this evening as a surface low tracks west of the area.

Rain chances range from 18% near Elmira and Binghamton to 39% in the northern Finger Lakes, including Cortland and Syracuse. The risk is highest north and west of I-81, where brief downpours or lightning could occur. Outdoor activities may want to wrap up early or have a backup plan in case of a passing storm.

Drivers should remain alert for sudden wet roads or reduced visibility through early evening. This is the first warm push of May, and while no severe weather is expected, another round of rain is possible overnight. Stay tuned for updated advisories as the pattern shifts midweek.
