Buffalo, New York – Thunderstorms firing up Friday afternoon could drench western New York just in time for the evening commute, with localized flooding possible along Route 33 and portions of I-90.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a marginal risk for excessive rainfall is in place for Erie and Genesee counties from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Scattered storms may dump over a quarter inch of rain in less than an hour, particularly in urban areas like downtown Buffalo, Cheektowaga, and Tonawanda. Motorists are urged to slow down during downpours and avoid low-lying roads prone to ponding.

Friday night brings a brief lull before isolated storms return Saturday after 2 p.m., though sunshine is expected to dominate much of the weekend. Highs in the low 70s should make Saturday afternoon ideal for outdoor events—once any lingering showers move through.

By Sunday, partly sunny skies and a light breeze will keep conditions pleasant, but new rain chances emerge Monday and Tuesday as another system slides into the region.

Plan to stay weather-aware Friday afternoon, especially if commuting or traveling through flood-prone roadways. Updates will follow if storm strength increases.
