Monticello, NY – Drivers across Sullivan County are dealing with fast-building snow this morning as a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday. Heavy snowfall is expected to continue through the afternoon, creating difficult travel and slowdowns during both the morning and evening commutes.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton, the storm is forecast to bring 5 to 9 inches across Sullivan County, with the heaviest bands arriving late Tuesday morning into early afternoon. Forecasters say snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour, limiting visibility and quickly coating untreated roads.

NWS officials warn that road conditions may deteriorate rapidly, especially on higher elevations and rural routes throughout Monticello, Liberty, Fallsburg, and surrounding communities. Temperatures remain cold enough for snow to accumulate on all surfaces, increasing the risk of slide-offs and fender-benders during peak traffic times.

Travelers are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and keep emergency supplies—such as food, water, blankets, and a flashlight—in their vehicles. The storm is also expected to cause minor disruptions to public transit and potential delays for school buses throughout Sullivan County.

The Winter Storm Warning will remain active until 6 p.m. Tuesday, though lighter snow showers may linger into the early evening. Residents can check updated road conditions by calling 511 or visiting the New York State travel information website.

More updates will be issued if snowfall rates intensify or if additional advisories are needed.
