New York, NY – A warm Saturday is on tap for New York City and much of the surrounding region, with temperatures climbing into the low 70s along Long Island and the coastal areas of Connecticut. Further inland, highs could soar into the mid-80s. But the pleasant weather won’t last, as an approaching cold front will bring showers and thunderstorms by the evening, lasting into the night.

According to the National Weather Service, the thunderstorms will arrive Saturday evening, bringing gusty winds and a slight risk for small hail. Areas across New Jersey, New York City, and surrounding counties may experience brief heavy rain and lightning, especially after 5 p.m. Localized flooding could also occur in spots with the heaviest rain.

Travelers should prepare for changing conditions, particularly along major highways like I-95 and I-80, where the storms could cause brief delays. While the storms are expected to weaken by Sunday morning, the NWS has issued a caution for gusty winds in the storm’s wake, reaching 20-25 mph, especially to the south of NYC.

The almanac for New York City shows an average temperature of 68°F for May 3, but Saturday’s highs will far exceed this. Keep an eye on the sky as you plan your outdoor activities, especially in the evening, when the weather may take a turn.
