Herkimer County, NY – A lake effect snow warning remains in effect for Southern Herkimer County until 7 p.m. Friday, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to create hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albany, snowfall totals will range from 2 to 6 inches, with localized areas near the Oneida and Otsego County border receiving up to 8 inches. Winds could gust as high as 50 mph, increasing the risk of falling tree branches and poor visibility.

Residents should prepare for slippery roads and difficult travel during both the morning and evening commutes on Friday. Whiteout conditions may develop within heavy snow bands, leading to rapid changes in visibility.

Officials advise travelers to carry an emergency kit, including a flashlight, food, and water. If travel is necessary, drivers should allow extra time and use caution on snow-covered roads.

The lake effect snow bands are expected to gradually weaken by Friday evening, but lingering flurries and gusty winds may still cause localized issues. Stay updated with the latest weather alerts from the National Weather Service.
