Binghamton, NY – Isolated thunderstorms could stir up brief downpours and gusty winds across central New York Thursday night, with the Southern Tier likely seeing the most activity.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, scattered showers will continue moving through the region into early Friday. While thunderstorms have mostly remained west of I-81, pockets of stronger cells may develop late tonight, particularly near Elmira, Ithaca, and Cortland. The agency warns that even isolated storms could bring sudden wind gusts and reduced visibility.
Radar at 6:48 p.m. Thursday showed widespread rain tracking eastward across the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier, with heavier bands west of Syracuse and Auburn. Travel on I-86 and I-81 could be slick at times, especially in low-lying areas. Power outages are unlikely but possible with stronger wind gusts.
Residents are urged to monitor local alerts, secure outdoor items, and avoid driving through standing water. While no widespread flooding is expected, rainfall may pond in poor drainage spots, especially overnight.
