Woodstock, N.Y. – Early risers in the Catskills woke to a rare June chill Monday as temperatures dipped to near freezing, putting gardens and crops at risk across western Greene and Ulster counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a Frost Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. EDT, with temperatures as low as 30°F expected in towns including Woodstock, Ellenville, Hunter, and Prattsville. Residents are urged to cover or bring in sensitive plants to prevent cold damage.
In areas like Tannersville and Napanoch, overnight lows approached record territory for early June. The advisory covers elevations and valleys alike, with frost likely to settle in low-lying areas. While no travel impacts are expected, local agriculture may take a hit if precautions aren’t taken.
This is the third frost alert in the region this spring, an unusual trend for early June. Gardeners and farmers should wait until mid-morning before uncovering plants to avoid cold shock.
Temperatures will rebound quickly after sunrise, but additional advisories could be issued later this week if another cold front moves through.
