Yonkers, N.Y. – Temperatures across the tri-state area are expected to spike Thursday afternoon, with Yonkers facing a 96% chance of hitting 90°F — the highest risk in the region.
According to the National Weather Service New York office, multiple locations across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut are at moderate to high risk for temperatures topping 90°F through 8 p.m. Thursday. Newark, N.J., trails just behind Yonkers with a 90% chance of breaching the 90-degree mark, while Newburgh and Central Park both stand at 75%.
West Milford is sitting at a 60% chance, while Bridgeport and New Haven, Conn., each have a 45% probability. Riverhead, on eastern Long Island, remains the least likely to experience the heat, with just a 5% chance.
Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity during peak hours, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Heat-related illness can develop quickly in these conditions, especially in urban areas like NYC where heat can linger due to concrete and asphalt buildup.
The heat risk will ease overnight, but more hot weather could return over the weekend.
