Albany, NY – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snow and strong winds to parts of New York and Vermont, with accumulations reaching up to 12 inches in some areas.

According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 1 a.m. EST Thursday for Hamilton, Herkimer, and Fulton counties in New York, as well as Bennington and Western Windham counties in Vermont. Snowfall rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour are expected overnight, particularly in the southern Adirondacks and higher elevations of Vermont.

New York’s affected areas could see between 6 and 12 inches of snow, while Vermont’s higher elevations may receive 6 to 9 inches, with lower areas accumulating 3 to 6 inches. Winds gusting up to 40 mph could cause blowing snow, reducing visibility and making travel hazardous.

Officials warn that roads could be icy and slippery, urging residents to slow down and use caution. If travel is necessary, motorists should carry an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water.

This storm is expected to taper off late Wednesday night into early Thursday, but lingering impacts could affect Thursday morning commutes.
