Binghamton, N.Y. – Drivers and residents across central New York should stay alert this afternoon as isolated thunderstorms could bring strong winds and potentially severe conditions, especially along a stalled frontal boundary stretching through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the best chance for thunderstorm development will occur across central New York early in the afternoon, with storms becoming more likely in the Southern Tier and Northeast Pennsylvania (NEPA) by evening as the front drifts southeast. The primary threat with any stronger storms will be damaging winds, with conditions slightly more favorable for severe weather later in the day.

Areas including Syracuse, Ithaca, Binghamton, and Elmira are all within the zone of heightened risk, particularly between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Motorists on I-81 and I-88 should prepare for sudden downpours and gusty winds. While not all areas will see storms, those that do could experience brief but intense weather.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, remain weather-aware through the evening, and avoid unnecessary travel during storm activity. Storm chances taper overnight, but more alerts could be issued if conditions continue to evolve.

Stay tuned for further updates from the National Weather Service as this system progresses.
