Buffalo, NY – A major shift in weather is set to hit western New York this week, bringing unseasonably warm temperatures, heavy rain, and a heightened risk of flooding. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Buffalo and surrounding areas from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will climb into the upper 50s by Wednesday, rapidly melting lingering snow. Combined with a half-inch or more of rainfall, the runoff could overwhelm rivers and creeks, leading to flooding concerns. Areas most at risk include low-lying neighborhoods and locations near Cattaraugus Creek, where ice jams could exacerbate rising water levels.

Tuesday will start with a slight chance of snow showers before transitioning to rain in the evening, with temperatures reaching 48°F. By Wednesday, a steady downpour is expected, with gusty winds up to 31 mph. The rain will taper off by Wednesday night, but additional snow showers are possible on Thursday as temperatures drop to the upper 30s.

Residents in flood-prone areas should monitor conditions closely, secure belongings, and be prepared for potential road closures. Emergency alerts may be issued if water levels rise significantly.

Looking ahead, Friday brings scattered snow showers with highs in the mid-30s, followed by a colder weekend with temperatures dipping into the low 20s at night.
