Buffalo, NY – Thunderstorms and heavy rain will slam into western New York Thursday evening, threatening to disrupt travel across Buffalo and nearby highways.

According to the National Weather Service, rain chances ramp up to 70% by late Thursday, with possible thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Showers will continue through Friday morning, with localized rainfall totals approaching half an inch. Expect reduced visibility and slick roads, especially along I-190, I-290, and Route 33 heading into downtown Buffalo.

Winds will pick up Thursday night, with gusts reaching 21 mph near Lake Erie. Areas south and east of Buffalo could see minor flooding in low-lying spots. If you’re heading out Thursday evening or during the Friday morning commute, plan extra time and drive cautiously. Avoid flooded underpasses and check for travel alerts before leaving.

By Friday afternoon, rain will taper off to scattered showers, though a stray thunderstorm can’t be ruled out. Highs will hover in the low 60s, with clouds sticking around into Friday night.
