Buffalo, N.Y. – Severe thunderstorms could batter western and central New York through 10 p.m. Tuesday, bringing the threat of damaging winds, large hail, and dangerous lightning to more than 30 counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for regions including Erie, Monroe, Cayuga, and St. Lawrence counties. The watch area spans from the southern tier near Allegany and Steuben to the North Country, including Franklin and Jefferson counties, and covers key cities like Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse.

Residents across the affected area could see wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to quarter size. Power outages are possible, particularly in rural areas where tree damage could block local roads. Travel on Interstate 90, the New York State Thruway, may be hazardous this evening due to sudden downpours and reduced visibility.

Emergency managers advise residents to secure loose outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary driving during storm activity, and monitor local alerts. Those outdoors should seek sturdy shelter at the first sign of thunder.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains active until 10 p.m., with additional warnings possible if storms intensify or organize into lines. Residents should stay tuned for updates throughout the evening.
