Syracuse, N.Y. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across Central New York Tuesday afternoon, with the most dangerous conditions likely between 3 and 8 p.m. Cities including Syracuse, Ithaca, and Elmira are under an Enhanced Risk (3 out of 5) for damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, storms will begin developing around 2 p.m. and may continue through 11 p.m. as a cold front pushes through the region. Confidence is growing in the timing and severity, with the potential for 60+ mph wind gusts and scattered power outages. Sunset could coincide with peak storm intensity, complicating evening travel across I-81 and Route 13.

Syracuse, Ithaca, and Elmira all show a sharp rise in severe weather probabilities during the afternoon, with wind being the most likely hazard, followed by hail. While tornado chances remain low, quick-spinning cells can’t be ruled out.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices in advance, and avoid non-essential travel this evening. Schools and outdoor events may face disruptions depending on storm arrival.

Severe thunderstorm watches or warnings may be issued later today. Stay tuned for alerts through weather.gov or local emergency channels.
