Binghamton, N.Y. – Cold air funneling into southern New York and northeastern Pennsylvania could lead to damaging frost in valley areas early Monday, putting gardens and sensitive plants at risk.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Frost Advisory remains in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Monday for Broome, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Steuben, Sullivan, and Tioga counties in New York, and Bradford, Northern Wayne, and Susquehanna counties in Pennsylvania. Temperatures are expected to drop into the mid-30s in sheltered valleys, while higher terrain will likely stay around 40°F and avoid frost.

Residents in places like Elmira, Binghamton, Norwich, and Montrose should cover or bring in tender plants tonight to prevent cold-weather damage. The advisory especially affects gardeners, growers, and rural homeowners in low-lying areas.

Frost this late in the season is uncommon but not unheard of in the Twin Tiers. The last widespread frost in early June occurred in 2015 under similar high-pressure conditions.

Conditions will warm quickly after sunrise Monday. However, those in vulnerable spots should expect more advisories this week if nighttime skies remain clear.
