New York, NY – New York wakes to biting air and rattling gusts that sting exposed skin and harden pavement fast. The cold settles in early, and it is not rushing out. Jackets snap in the wind, breath hangs in the air, and sidewalks refreeze as yesterday’s melt turns slick before most commuters step outside.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect this morning for southeast New York and northeast New Jersey, with wind chills dipping as low as 5 to 10 degrees below zero. Officials warn that hypothermia can develop quickly without proper layers, hats, and gloves.

Across the city, north winds funnel through avenues today, keeping highs in the low to mid-20s. Bridges, ramps, and untreated side streets may glaze over, especially where melting snow refroze before sunrise. Drivers should slow down and expect longer travel times on the FDR Drive, the BQE, and approaches to the George Washington Bridge.

Relief stays limited as February grinds on. Sunshine returns Monday and Tuesday, but cold air holds firm, with daytime highs near freezing and teens at night. That sets the stage for classic flash-freezing after any daytime melt. Meteorologists are also watching a midweek system that could brush the region with light snow or flurries as colder air reloads from the Midwest.

By late week, another surge of cold air drops south along I-95, keeping winter firmly in place through Saturday. Keep pets indoors, protect exposed pipes, and plan extra time for early-morning travel. Conditions may change quickly, and additional advisories could be issued.

Traveling this week or heading out early? How icy did it feel where you are?
