New York, NY – The National Weather Service has issued multiple marine warnings for waters off New York and New Jersey, citing hazardous conditions through Friday evening. Mariners are urged to exercise caution as dense fog and gale-force winds threaten visibility and navigation.
According to the NWS, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect Thursday morning, with visibility reduced to 1/2 to 1 nautical mile in affected areas, including Long Island Sound, Peconic and Gardiners Bays, and waters from Sandy Hook, NJ, to Montauk, NY. Navigators are advised to use fog signals and running lights for safety.
A Gale Warning will take effect from 6 p.m. Thursday through 6 p.m. Friday, bringing west winds of 20 to 30 knots and gusts up to 45 knots, with seas reaching up to 14 feet in some areas. Strong winds and rough waves could capsize small vessels or cause damage, making conditions hazardous for mariners.
A Small Craft Advisory is also in place until 6 p.m. Thursday for parts of the coastal waters, including New York Harbor and Long Island’s South Shore Bays, as winds reach 25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots.
Mariners are strongly advised to avoid travel or seek shelter until conditions improve. The NWS recommends securing vessels, monitoring weather updates, and using radar and compass navigation if travel is necessary.
