Buffalo, NY – Dangerous heat will grip Western New York through Tuesday, with heat index values soaring to 104°F in cities like Rochester, Buffalo, and Medina. The region’s highest heat levels are expected Monday afternoon, when outdoor activity could become hazardous.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from Sunday through Tuesday evening for all of Western New York and the Eastern Lake Ontario region. The most oppressive heat will occur between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. daily, with minimal cooling overnight as temperatures remain in the 70s.
The Genesee Valley, Finger Lakes, and inland towns such as Canandaigua and Newark will be most affected, where outdoor work and non-air-conditioned spaces could lead to heat-related illness. Communities like Rochester and Springville may experience heat indices above 100°F both Sunday and Monday. Residents are urged to hydrate, avoid strenuous activity during peak hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
This prolonged event could break temperature records, with both high daytime readings and abnormally warm nights. Relief is unlikely before Wednesday.
Heat Advisories may be extended if conditions persist beyond Tuesday.
