Olean, N.Y. – Gardeners across Cattaraugus and Allegany counties should take immediate precautions as patchy frost is expected to develop overnight, potentially damaging sensitive plants.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Frost Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday as overnight lows dip into the mid-30s. The coldest temperatures are likely in sheltered valley areas near towns like Olean and Wellsville.
Residents are urged to bring potted plants indoors and cover any tender vegetation left outside. The advisory warns that unprotected outdoor plants could suffer damage or die due to the cold.
This rare early June chill follows a stretch of above-average temperatures, making it especially critical for home gardeners and local farmers to stay alert. While no widespread freeze is expected, rural and low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable to early morning frost.
The advisory expires at 7 a.m. Monday, but temperatures are expected to remain seasonably cool through midweek. Additional alerts are not currently expected but may be issued if colder air lingers.
