Bath, N.Y. – Thunderstorms drenched parts of western and central New York Monday evening, prompting flash flood warnings in Steuben and Allegany counties where roads, streams and low-lying areas may flood through 10:45 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton and Buffalo, radar detected up to 2.5 inches of rain falling over the region with another 1 to 2 inches possible before storms taper off. Flash flooding is already occurring or expected to begin shortly in locations including Hornell, Wellsville, Bath, and Alfred.
In Steuben County, rainfall between a half-inch and an inch has already triggered alerts for towns such as Canisteo, Avoca, and Hammondsport. In neighboring Allegany County, areas like Friendship, Alma, and Whitesville are also under immediate threat, especially near creeks, underpasses, and hilly terrain with poor drainage.
Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways—“Turn around, don’t drown” warnings are in effect—and residents should be prepared for sudden water rise in basements, fields, and campgrounds. Emergency officials recommend charging phones, avoiding unnecessary travel, and monitoring local alerts.
Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect until at least 10:45 p.m., with more updates possible if heavy rain persists.
