New York, NY – Boaters across the New York and Long Island waters are urged to use extreme caution tonight as dense fog rolls in, slashing visibility to under 1 nautical mile and creating hazardous navigation conditions through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, the Dense Fog Advisory covers a wide swath of coastal waters—from Sandy Hook, New Jersey to Montauk Point, New York—including New York Harbor, Long Island Sound, and the Peconic and Gardiners Bays. The fog, which began developing late Monday afternoon, is expected to linger through the early morning hours, and may even persist beyond the current advisory window.

The reduced visibility is especially dangerous for smaller vessels and nighttime navigation. Mariners are advised to use radar, stay alert, activate running lights, and sound proper fog signals. Conditions are particularly tricky in South Shore Bays and western portions of the Sound, where visibility may dip near zero at times.

This is one of the season’s first widespread fog events along the tri-state coast, and officials stress caution as recreational boating increases in June.

More marine alerts may follow Tuesday if fog remains thick after sunrise.
