New York, NY – Gale-force winds are churning up the waters off Long Island this morning, with hazardous seas expected to persist through Friday. Mariners from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, to Montauk Point, New York, are urged to remain in port as waves climb to 17 feet in spots and gusts reach up to 40 knots.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect through early this morning, but conditions worsen quickly with a Gale Warning active from 6 a.m. today through Friday morning. The advisory covers the nearshore waters from Fire Island Inlet to Moriches Inlet, and eastward out to Montauk Point.

Seas will build to between 11 and 17 feet, particularly east of Moriches Inlet, while winds from the northeast strengthen throughout the day. These conditions are expected to create treacherous navigation, reduced visibility, and the risk of capsizing or vessel damage.

The Coast Guard and local emergency managers are urging boaters to delay trips, secure moorings, and avoid open waters until conditions ease Friday afternoon. Ferry service across Long Island may also face delays or cancellations if the rough seas persist into the morning commute.

Hazardous marine conditions are expected to gradually subside after midday Friday, though rough surf could linger along ocean-facing beaches into the weekend.
