New York, NY – A coastal flood advisory remains in effect through Friday morning, impacting vulnerable waterfront areas across Manhattan and Southeast Suffolk County. Minor flooding is anticipated, with tides rising up to a half foot above ground level in low-lying areas. Residents should exercise caution in affected zones, as flooding could disrupt roads, parking areas, and properties, especially those with basements near the waterfront.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the advisory, initially set to expire Thursday, was extended due to continued tidal impacts expected during high tide cycles. The NWS warns that high tides occurring around 7 a.m. Friday could bring minor inundation in susceptible areas, with peak water levels forecasted at approximately 7.2 feet at the Battery in New York Harbor and 5.2 feet at Montauk’s Fort Pond Bay.
Additional minor flooding may occur along the Southeastern Suffolk coastline on Saturday morning, though the extent is expected to be limited. The advisory encourages residents to plan for potential road closures and avoid driving through flooded areas, as water depths may be uncertain.
Looking ahead, the forecast suggests cooler and dry conditions will dominate through the weekend, with high temperatures gradually rising from the mid-50s on Friday to around 60 by Sunday. Overnight lows will remain chilly, ranging from the mid-40s to near 50. Winds from the northeast on Thursday will shift northwest by Friday, maintaining speeds between 10 and 15 mph.
For ongoing updates and detailed safety precautions, the NWS advises checking weather alerts at weather.gov/nyc. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to take protective actions, especially if further advisories are issued over the weekend.
