New York City – A winter storm is expected to bring 5 to 9 inches of snow to New York City from Friday evening into Saturday morning, with snowfall rates exceeding one inch per hour at times and significant travel impacts likely.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for New York City as well as northeastern New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley, and western Long Island. Forecasters say the heaviest snowfall is expected between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday, coinciding with the evening commute.

Snow is forecast to begin late Friday afternoon, becoming steadier and heavier during the evening hours. The Weather Service notes that localized snowfall rates may briefly exceed two inches per hour in stronger snow bands, which could rapidly reduce visibility and cause roads to become snow-covered in a short period of time.

Event-total snowfall projections show most of New York City within the 5- to 9-inch range, though some areas could see higher totals if heavier snow bands persist longer than expected. Temperatures are forecast to remain in the mid to upper 20s, allowing snow to accumulate efficiently on untreated surfaces.

The Weather Service warns that hazardous travel conditions are likely due to slick roads and falling snow, particularly during periods of intense snowfall Friday night. Snow is expected to taper to lighter showers overnight, with lingering snow possible into Saturday morning.

Forecasters note some uncertainty remains regarding the precise placement of the heaviest snow bands, which could affect localized totals. Residents and commuters are urged to stay informed of updates and allow extra time for travel as the storm moves through the region.
