New York City, NY – A surge of Arctic air is set to grip New York late next week, plunging temperatures to single digits with subzero wind chills between Thursday, December 11, and Monday, December 15. The outbreak will bring the coldest air of the season to both upstate and downstate regions, including New York City, Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, and Rochester.
According to the National Weather Service New York, the Arctic front will move in Thursday night, sending morning lows into the teens and single digits, with wind chills dropping as low as –10°F to –20°F in parts of western and northern New York. Even along the coast, New York City and Long Island could see wind chills near zero by early Saturday morning.
Forecasters expect the pattern to stay largely dry, but lake-effect snow showers are likely across western and central New York. The main story, however, remains the dangerous cold and biting northwest winds, which could make outdoor exposure hazardous for long durations.
Officials urge New Yorkers to bundle up, protect pets and pipes, and limit time outdoors. Frostbite can develop in as little as 10 minutes under extreme wind chill conditions. Drivers are advised to check antifreeze levels and carry cold-weather kits when traveling upstate.
The Arctic chill will remain entrenched through Monday, December 16, with only a slow moderation expected midweek. Meteorologists are also monitoring the potential for a reinforcing cold wave later in December.
Stay updated through the National Weather Service New York, Buffalo, and the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services for new advisories as this cold blast approaches.
