Binghamton, NY – A winter storm is set to sweep through Central New York on Sunday, bringing heavy snow and creating hazardous travel conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that snowfall could reach up to 4 inches in some areas, potentially disrupting travel along I-88 and other major routes.
According to the NWS, snow will begin late Sunday morning and continue into the evening. Accumulation is expected to be heaviest in the afternoon, with localized slick spots and poor visibility anticipated. Motorists are urged to drive cautiously and allow extra time for travel. If possible, avoid non-essential trips during peak snowfall hours.
Following the snowstorm, bitterly cold temperatures will grip the region. Wind chills between -15°F and -25°F are forecast from Monday night through Wednesday, posing a risk of frostbite for those outdoors for prolonged periods. Residents should prepare by ensuring pipes are insulated, vehicles are winterized, and emergency kits are stocked.
Sunday night’s low is expected to drop to 7°F, with a slight chance of lingering snow showers. The coldest period will occur early next week, with daytime highs struggling to reach the teens and overnight lows falling below zero.
Despite the severe cold, calmer conditions are forecast by midweek, with mostly sunny skies on Wednesday. However, residents should remain vigilant and take precautions to stay safe during this extreme weather.
