New Orleans, La. – Residents across southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi are facing another dangerous stretch of heat Wednesday as the National Weather Service warns of heat index values climbing to near 110 degrees. The advisory remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, impacting New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Gulfport, and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, extreme heat combined with high humidity will sharply increase the risk of heat-related illness, particularly for those without access to cooling or shade. Forecasters noted that New Orleans could see actual highs near 93, but the “feels-like” temperature could rise past 105 by mid-afternoon.

Cities including Baton Rouge, Metairie, Gulfport, and Biloxi fall under the advisory. Outdoor workers are urged to take frequent breaks in shaded areas, while residents are reminded to check on elderly neighbors and stay hydrated. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration stresses that anyone experiencing heat stroke symptoms should be moved to a cooler location immediately and treated as a medical emergency.

Scattered thunderstorms may develop late Wednesday and become more widespread Thursday and Friday, bringing temporary relief but also the potential for heavy downpours.

The heat advisory expires Wednesday evening, but above-average heat and humidity are expected to linger into the weekend.
