Albuquerque, NM – A Freezing Fog Advisory is active tonight for northern New Mexico’s valley areas, including Taos, Española, and Santa Fe. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns residents of potential hazards as temperatures drop, leading to slick and icy roads.
According to the NWS, freezing fog reduces visibility, making travel dangerous, particularly along rural and unlit roads. Drivers should use low beams, travel slowly, and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Frost or ice may also accumulate on surfaces, creating hidden black ice and posing additional risks.
Besides travel concerns, freezing fog can strain power lines and trees, increasing the chance of outages. NWS officials urge residents to stay informed of weather updates and to prepare for possible impacts.
Freezing fog forms when water droplets freeze on contact with surfaces, causing frosty conditions that often catch drivers off guard. If driving, use extra caution, particularly on bridges and overpasses where ice is more likely to form.
