Albuquerque, N.M. – Strong east canyon winds are expected to slam into the Albuquerque area overnight Thursday, bringing gusts up to 55 mph by early Friday and posing serious risks for travel and outdoor activity.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, the strongest winds will funnel through Tijeras Canyon and the I-40 corridor, with peak gusts between 40 and 55 mph likely near the ABQ Sunport and surrounding foothills from late Thursday into Friday morning.

Drivers of high-profile vehicles should avoid travel along I-40, especially east of Albuquerque toward Moriarty, where crosswinds could make road conditions treacherous. Winds will also be capable of overturning trailers, toppling trash bins, and sending patio furniture flying. Gusts near 29 mph are possible in areas like Mountainair and Abo, while Estancia and Belen may see winds between 16 and 25 mph.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, limit travel in high-profile vehicles, and remain alert to changing road conditions. Similar east wind events in the region have previously caused power outages and minor property damage.

Wind alerts remain in effect through Friday morning, with conditions expected to improve by midday. Further advisories may be issued as needed.
