Albuquerque, NM – Strong east canyon winds will impact Albuquerque and surrounding areas late Wednesday night, bringing gusts over 40 mph. Winds will develop on the east side of the metro, stretching from Placitas to Meadow Lake.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, the strongest gusts will occur between midnight Wednesday and sunrise Thursday. Localized areas below canyons may see the most intense winds, with blowing dust reducing visibility.

Residents should secure outdoor objects, as strong gusts may cause loose debris to become airborne. Drivers, especially those in high-profile vehicles, should use caution on east-west roads.

These winds are common in late winter as pressure differences increase across New Mexico. However, strong gusts can still lead to hazardous driving conditions and power disruptions.

The NWS advises checking weather updates for changing conditions. Wind speeds are expected to decrease after sunrise Thursday, bringing calmer conditions to the region.
