Albuquerque, NM – Strong winds and dangerously dry conditions are impacting much of central and northern New Mexico Thursday, prompting multiple weather alerts from the National Weather Service.

According to the NWS Albuquerque office, a Wind Advisory and Red Flag Warning remain in effect until 9 p.m. MDT Thursday, with a second Red Flag Warning issued for Friday from noon to 7 p.m. Areas affected include the Albuquerque metro, Santa Fe, Roswell, the Northeast Highlands, and much of the Rio Grande Valley.

Southwest winds are expected to sustain speeds of 30 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph Thursday and potentially up to 60 mph in higher elevations. Blowing dust may reduce visibility below three miles, especially near Roswell, where visibility could fall below half a mile at times.

Humidity levels will range from 5% to 10%, creating an elevated risk for wildfires. Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning and to secure loose items that could become airborne.

Drivers, especially those in high-profile vehicles, should use extra caution due to strong crosswinds. Fire crews and local agencies have been advised to remain on alert for rapidly developing fire conditions through Friday evening.
