Santa Fe, N.M. – Strong thunderstorms are building across eastern New Mexico this evening, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch that remains active through 10 p.m. MDT Sunday for 11 counties, including Curry, Chaves, and San Miguel.
According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail larger than quarters are possible as storms move east-northeast through late evening. The watch—number 398—covers areas from the Texas border near Clovis to the northeastern plains including Union and Colfax counties.
Communities like Roswell, Tucumcari, and Portales should prepare for sudden downpours, lightning, and reduced visibility on highways including U.S. 60, 70, and 84. Power outages and minor flash flooding may occur in localized areas, especially near poorly drained intersections.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items, avoid travel during storm activity, and stay indoors if lightning is nearby. Emergency managers urge the public to charge phones and monitor local alerts via NOAA Weather Radio or mobile apps.
This is the first significant convective outbreak for the region in June. More storm development is possible into early next week.
