Roswell, N.M. – Strong to severe storms are expected across eastern New Mexico this afternoon, bringing threats of flash flooding, large hail, and damaging winds from Roswell to Las Vegas until 10 p.m. Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a marginal risk for severe weather covers a large stretch of the eastern plains, including Tucumcari, Clines Corners, and Santa Rosa. Storms are most likely between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the strongest cells capable of producing localized flooding, especially near burn scars and low-water crossings.
Colfax and Union counties face the greatest concern for flooding due to recent heavy rains and more precipitation expected through Saturday. Rain totals could exceed one inch in some areas, with the heaviest rainfall occurring each afternoon and early evening. Drivers on rural roads should use caution, as dirt roads may become slick or impassable.
Roswell and nearby areas will also see highs in the low 90s with storm chances increasing into the weekend. Albuquerque and western New Mexico will stay dry today but see rising rain chances starting Saturday.
Flash flood watches remain in effect in northeastern areas. Residents should stay alert to changing conditions and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
