Albuquerque, NM – A high wind warning remains in effect across much of central and eastern New Mexico, with damaging gusts expected from late Thursday night through Friday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, west winds of 35 to 50 mph with gusts reaching up to 75 mph will impact multiple regions, including the Sandia and Manzano Mountains, the Estancia Valley, and the South Central Highlands. The warning is in effect from midnight Thursday night until 6 p.m. Friday for central, east-central, north-central, northeast, and southeast New Mexico. For the South Central Mountains and Southwest Chaves County, the warning begins at 6 p.m. Thursday.

These powerful winds may bring down trees and power lines, leading to widespread power outages. Travel will be hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles, as blowing dust could significantly reduce visibility. Motorists, especially those driving large vehicles, are urged to delay travel if possible.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor objects such as trash cans and patio furniture to prevent damage. With the potential for power disruptions, keeping flashlights, batteries, and emergency supplies on hand is recommended.
