Cloudcroft, New Mexico – Residents and travelers in the Sacramento Mountains could face damaging wind gusts up to 65 mph before sunrise Sunday, raising the risk of falling trees, power outages, and dangerous driving conditions through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in El Paso/Santa Teresa, a High Wind Warning will be in effect from 3 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday for the Sacramento Mountains and nearby eastern slopes, including Cloudcroft, Mayhill, Apache Summit, Pinon, Sunspot, and Sacramento.
West winds are expected to increase to 35 to 45 mph, with stronger gusts capable of knocking down tree limbs and damaging power lines across higher elevations above 7,500 feet as well as communities along the eastern mountain slopes.
Drivers traveling along U.S. Highway 82 between Alamogordo and Cloudcroft and mountain roads near Apache Summit could experience sudden crosswinds that make steering difficult, especially for campers, box trucks, and other high-profile vehicles.
The dry air and strong winds will also increase wildfire danger across southern New Mexico, where any new fire start could spread quickly.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture and loose equipment before early Sunday morning and prepare for possible power disruptions. Limiting travel during peak wind periods will help reduce the risk of accidents on exposed mountain roads.
The strongest winds are expected to gradually weaken Sunday evening, though additional advisories may be issued if the system intensifies across southern New Mexico.
