Albuquerque, N.M. – Parts of central and eastern New Mexico could see large hail and wind gusts up to 75 mph through 10 p.m. Monday, as severe thunderstorms sweep across the region.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect from Raton to Roswell, with supercell storms expected to develop and intensify through the evening. Hail up to 2 inches in diameter and isolated damaging wind gusts are the primary threats. The storms may organize into fast-moving clusters, increasing the risk for widespread wind damage.

Cities under the watch include Santa Rosa, Tucumcari, Clovis, and Portales, as well as I-40 and U.S. Route 285 corridors. Emergency officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, remain indoors during warnings, and be prepared for sudden power outages. Motorists should delay non-essential travel, especially in open or high-profile vehicles vulnerable to strong crosswinds.

This marks one of the strongest thunderstorm events to hit eastern New Mexico this month, with conditions resembling a similar outbreak in June 2023.

The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10 p.m., and additional warnings may be issued as storms develop. Stay tuned to local alerts and NOAA Weather Radio for updates.
