El Paso, TX – Thunderstorms building across southern New Mexico and West Texas on Wednesday could unleash over 4 inches of rain in some areas — prompting flash flood concerns across the El Paso metro and beyond.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, a Flood Watch remains in effect through Wednesday evening, covering Dona Ana, Otero, Sierra, Luna, Grant, and Hidalgo counties. The warning also extends to parts of West Texas, including El Paso and Hudspeth counties, where repeated rounds of storms may drench already saturated soil.

Roadways like Interstate 10 and U.S. Route 70 could become dangerous by midday as excessive runoff from intense storms may trigger flooding in flood-prone zones. Residents in low-lying areas or near burn scars should remain alert for rapidly rising water. The storms could deliver 1 to 3 inches of rain, with some isolated totals exceeding 4 inches.

Local emergency agencies advise drivers to avoid travel through flooded intersections and to charge phones, prepare sandbags, and secure outdoor items.

Conditions improve slightly by Thursday, but moisture remains in the region through the weekend. Expect more scattered storms and above-normal humidity.
